Abstract

Additive manufacturing has emerged as a transformative technology in civil engineering by enabling innovative construction methods, improving material efficiency, and supporting sustainable infrastructure development. This systematic literature review aims to synthesize recent research on the application of additive manufacturing in civil engineering based on published over the last five years. The review examines technological advancements, construction materials, engineering applications, key benefits, existing limitations, and future research directions. The findings indicate that three-dimensional (3D) concrete printing has become the most widely investigated application, demonstrating significant potential to reduce material waste, construction time, and labor requirements while enhancing design flexibility and construction accuracy. Nevertheless, challenges remain regarding material performance, structural reliability, standardization, economic feasibility, and regulatory compliance. The review also highlights increasing integration with digital technologies to improve construction automation and project management. Overall, additive manufacturing offers promising opportunities for advancing sustainable, efficient, and resilient civil engineering practices, although further research and industrial implementation are required to facilitate its widespread adoption.
